IU Health Expands Emergency Services at Methodist Hospital
New 24-bed unit and advanced imaging equipment to serve growing downtown patient volume
INDIANAPOLIS — IU Health Methodist Hospital announced Tuesday the completion of a $12 million expansion of its emergency department, adding 24 new beds and state-of-the-art imaging equipment to better serve patients in downtown Indianapolis and surrounding neighborhoods.
The expansion, which opened to patients Monday morning, increases the hospital's emergency capacity by nearly 40% and includes two new trauma bays equipped with advanced life support systems. The project also features a dedicated pediatric emergency area and updated triage facilities designed to reduce wait times during peak hours.
"This expansion represents our commitment to providing world-class emergency care to the Indianapolis community," said Dr. Patricia Williams, Methodist Hospital's Emergency Department Medical Director. "We've seen a 25% increase in emergency visits over the past three years, particularly from residents in Fountain Square, Fletcher Place, and the downtown core. This expansion ensures we can continue to meet that growing demand."
The new wing includes two CT scanners and an MRI unit dedicated exclusively to emergency patients, eliminating the need to transport critical patients to other areas of the hospital for imaging. Hospital officials say this improvement could reduce diagnosis time by up to 30 minutes for stroke and trauma cases.
Addressing Community Healthcare Needs
The expansion comes as Indianapolis continues to experience population growth in downtown neighborhoods and the near-eastside corridor along Washington Street and Madison Avenue. Methodist Hospital, located on North Meridian Street, serves as a primary emergency care provider for residents from Broad Ripple to Garfield Park.
"Having faster, more comprehensive emergency services right here in our backyard is crucial for our community," said Marcus Thompson, president of the Fletcher Place Neighborhood Association. "When every minute counts in a medical emergency, knowing we have this level of care available at Methodist gives families real peace of mind."
The hospital's emergency department treated more than 78,000 patients last year, with the busiest periods typically occurring during evening hours and weekends. The expansion is expected to reduce average wait times from 45 minutes to approximately 30 minutes during peak periods.
Economic Impact and Future Plans
Construction of the emergency department expansion created approximately 150 temporary jobs and will support 45 new permanent positions, including nurses, technicians, and support staff. The project was completed by Indianapolis-based Skillman Corporation, with medical equipment provided by several local vendors.
Hospital administrators say the expansion positions Methodist Hospital to handle projected patient volume increases through 2030. The facility also received updated security systems and improved parking access from 16th Street to accommodate the additional patient flow.
IU Health Methodist Hospital, founded in 1908, is Indiana's largest hospital and serves as the primary teaching hospital for Indiana University School of Medicine. The emergency department expansion is part of a broader $50 million infrastructure improvement plan scheduled for completion by late 2024.
